This year marks Canada's sesquicentennial, and fifty years since I was a sixth grader pining to go to Montreal to join in the Centennial celebrations. For the whole year our curriculum was Expo-obsessed and everyone was going except me. No one seemed to care that I was celebrating on my own. I lapped up the coverage and information from fellow students who had travelled to Montreal with their families which left me with a desire to see this exhibit with my own eyes. I wanted to see the world beyond London, Ont., but in sixth grade it was a clearly an insurmountable task. The germ was planted. I was bitten by a travel bug and the antidote was to see the rest of my country. By the time high school hit, all the seniors were making the great pilgrimage to B.C. and hitchhiking across the county, but, again that seemed like an insurmountable task. Shit happened... again. In 2014 Olympian Clara Hughes cycled across Canada to raise awareness for mental health. I watched her
Day 29 - 20 July - Caliper Lake - 126kms If there could be a perfect riding day in this tour, this would have been it! Today was cool and there was no wind! The road was great to ride on and the traffic was light. That's always a good thing. There are so many beautiful lakes here. I had no idea the scenery was so beautiful! The road cut through the rock is impressive! I had time to stop at a good bakery in Soux Narrows to eat a great almond poppyseed cornmeal muffin! I arrived at Caliper Provincial Park in plenty of time to help with dinner. The mosquitos were very bad. The nearly drove us crazy but we managed to get dinner ready! The lake at the is park is large, picturesque, and peaceful! There is a dock at the beach where you can watch the sunset! Such a great summer thing to do!
Day 58 - 18 Aug - Trois Pistoles - 117kms The day started out very relaxed. The distance was shorter and we started out later. The towns we went through were lovely! I just can't get enough of the original cottages. They are so lovingly maintained and colourful. I could take pictures of them all day! Most of the day we had great views of the St. Lawerence. Spectacular! The afternoon was a different story. The wind picked up and we got an outrageous headwind for 30k! I was lucky to get 25k an hour! Hate the wind! It's really demoralizing. When we got to camp it started raining and it was cold! I had my down jacket on! Hopefully, it won't rain too much tomorrow.
