Saturday, April 22 Training ride to St. Mary's This week's route took us  110km's.  I have not ridden that distance in a very, very, long time! I was so  happy to have my friend, Liz, a seasoned cyclist, there to keep me company! When she said, "do you want to go to St. Mary's?" I said sure! It was a great ride. The weather had been unbelievably rainy this week but today, it was perfect! Sunny and about 14 degrees. We did have a headwind going north but nothing insurmountable. We knew we'd have a tailwind on the way back. At the corner of Prospect and Highway 7, I couldn't resist taking a few pictures of these brand new foals and there mothers! Adorable! Highway 7 is not a road I want to ride on! I was glad we were just crossing it! St. Mary's is the 'stone' town. I had to get a picture by the sign on the way into town. It's such a pretty place. Sunday April 9th -Ride to Port Stanley and back Cold but sunny day today. Perfect for a long bike ride. As I progress in my training, I will ride longer and longer distances each week.  This week I've decided to ride from London to Port Stanley. That's about 84km's. I hadn't ridden that route since the 80's.  I had this picture from way back! Back in my old GM days, I was part of a group who used to ride long distances. Port Stanley was one of our favourite rides. Me on my old Fiori road bike It felt great to out and ride. I have run this route many, many times with my running pals. It's an awesome training run. Having bloody Ceaser's at GT's after the run is the real reason we do this!  It was kind of weird riding and not running. I did have company. Pat joined me for about 15 kms and Doug drove to Port Stanley and rode his bike back to me. I met him at Union Hill and rode back to the beach with him.  Just like the end o

The origins of my ride in a nutshell

This year marks Canada's sesquicentennial, and fifty years since I was a sixth grader pining to go to Montreal to join in the Centennial celebrations. For the whole year our curriculum was Expo-obsessed and everyone was going except me. No one seemed to care that I was celebrating on my own. I lapped up the coverage and information from fellow students who had travelled to Montreal with their families which left me with a desire to see this exhibit with my own eyes. I wanted to see the world beyond London, Ont., but in sixth grade it was a clearly an insurmountable task. The germ was planted. I was bitten by a travel bug and the antidote was to see the rest of my country. By the time high school hit, all the seniors were making the great pilgrimage to B.C. and hitchhiking across the county, but, again that seemed like an insurmountable task. Shit happened... again. In 2014 Olympian Clara Hughes cycled across Canada to raise awareness for mental health. I watched her
